Dinosaurs may have disappeared from the Earth, but they are still making headlines! Jodi, an extraordinary dinosaur skeleton recently sold at Sotheby’s auction in New York on October 27, 2026, for an astonishing $47.3 million!
Jodi was originally believed to be a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex, but scientists now classify the fossil as a Nanotyrannus, a smaller relative of the famous T. rex.
Discovered in 2019 by Montana rancher Jodi Pierson on her property, the skeleton is nearly 20 feet long and stands about 9½ feet tall. It includes an impressive skull, approximately 50 teeth, and remarkably preserved claws. Scientists believe Nanotyrannus was a faster, more slender predator than its larger cousin, with longer arms and larger claws.
The auction was an exciting event, with six bidders competing for more than 12 minutes. Jodi’s estimated value was between $6 million and $9 million, but the final selling price soared far beyond expectations. The winning bidder has chosen to remain anonymous.
Jodi’s sale has also sparked debate among scientists. Many believe rare fossils should be displayed in museums so researchers and the public can learn from these incredible pieces of prehistoric history.
Interestingly, Jodi now holds the title of the second-most expensive dinosaur fossil ever sold at auction, just behind Gus, the T. rex, which sold for $50.1 million earlier in 2026.
From a dusty Montana ranch to a multimillion-dollar auction, Jodi’s journey is truly remarkable! Who would have imagined the value of these bones?
