Share Our Strength is Picking Battles Big Enough to Win and WINNING!

The founder of the nonprofit Share Our Strength determined many years ago that children who suffer or struggle with hunger in some way here in the United States could be helped. It is not because of war, drought, or famine that some kids are missing meals in our country, and it’s not because we don’t have enough food assistance programs. Billy Shore realized that it was a connection problem and believed that it was a solvable issue, and he was right.
Billy Shore began his endeavor by creating the “No Kid Hungry” program, which has been highly successful. According to Billy Shore, one in six children here in the United States struggles with hunger in some way. It was discovered that there was federal funding for school meals that wasn’t being used by the states and cities. The nonprofit was able to notify the schools and assist them in accessing the funds. This has resulted in 3.2 million kids being able to secure food.
One interesting quote that Billy Shore shared in an interview with Katherine Klein was from a writer names Jonathan Kozol. He is is given credit for saying that you should pick battles that are big enough to matter, but small enough to win. Shore loves that construct, explaining that there are many things that we all care about, but some things are too complex or huge to fix. But on the other hand, child hunger in America is one thing that is big enough to matter, but small enough to win.
Billy Shore admits that in 6 or 7 years from now, if interviewed, he is fairly certain that there will still be poverty, but believes that we won’t have hungry kids in the United States. That is commendable.
