As the 2026 Winter Olympics (Milano Cortina 2026) are currently underway (February 6–22), the “trends” have shifted from predictions to the actual reality on the ground. This year’s Games are defined by a mix of extreme decentralization, high-fashion influence, and a heavy focus on climate adaptability.
Unlike traditional Games centered in a single city, 2026 is the most geographically dispersed Winter Olympics in history. The venues are spread across Northern Italy. Milan has the ice sports and the Dolomites will host the snow events. Travel between the events will be a significant 5-10 hours.
There will be a heavy reliance on high-efficiency, automated snow-making systems that use 30% less electricity and no chemical additives.
These Games are setting records for inclusivity and variety. A new sport called ski mountaineering is making its first appearance as an Olympic discipline.
There are also some new events including the women’s doubles in luge, men’s freestyle skiing dual moguls, and a mixed team snowboard cross.
As always, the Olympics are exciting to watch!
