Interesting New Data Regarding Giving Trends

The Fundraising Effectiveness Project recently released the 2022 third quarter results and the bottom line summary is that individual donors’ numbers are decreasing, but the amounts that are being donated are increasing.  That means that the concern is how to retain the donors and incentivize them to give again.

One takeaway from the report was that the number of donors fell 7.1% which means that fewer people are giving to charity.  Also, donations less than $500 made up the majority of the contributions.  In fact, 85% of donations fall into this category.

Although the total number of donors has decreased, the amount of total donations has increased with a 4.7% rise.

One takeaway is the donor retention dropped 3.1% which continued the pattern across all levels.  This means that a focus for organizations will be to find ways to more effectively attract new donors and maintain their interest in giving more than once.  It was found that 70% of donors only give once.

One final note from this report is that the number of organizations reporting this information decreased by 10.4%.  It may indicate that there were not adequate resources to collect the data and report it.
