The people in Eastern Kentucky saw historic flooding back in June 2022 that killed eight people and trapped others in homes, buildings, and left some people without homes. This happened in the Appalachian region and encompassed several counties. The governor signed a state of emergency and stated that it may take years for many families to rebuild and recover.
One organization that has been helping the families who have been hit with this disaster is the HDA, (Housing Development Alliance) located in Hazard, Kentucky. The HDA has been assisting the people in need to find the resources to begin rebuilding and has also been providing teams to muck out the homes that have been affected.
There have been an estimated 2300 houses impacted by the flood, therefore this is a very tedious and lengthy process.
Volunteers have been assembling teams to assist with the cleanup, but it often takes 3-5 days per home.
The HDA works with multiple organizations on the local, state, and federal level, as well as in the private sector with people from eastern Kentucky. It provides teams of volunteers to help in crisis situations, such as the flood clean-up, as well as creating jobs, and investing in the local economy. This organization should be commended for what it stands for and continues to do. The people of this area are grateful for the services it provides and much progress is being made because of the dedication of this incredible organization.
