We will all miss Dolly. Dolly Parton built one of the most practical, direct, and transformative philanthropic legacies in modern history. Her philosophy of giving was simple: identify immediate human needs, strip away red tape, and deliver direct help with humility and warmth.
She had several focus areas of giving throughout her life.
Inspired by her father, who was illiterate, Dolly founded the Dollywood Foundation in 1988 to improve educational opportunities in her home region of Sevier County, Tennessee.
One of the special programs from the Dollywood Foundation was the Imagination Library. Launched in 1995, this signature program mails a free, age-appropriate book every month to registered children from birth to age five. What began as a local effort grew into an international movement operating in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, and Australia, delivering over 300 million books worldwide.
She also, through her foundation, launched the “Buddy Program,” offering $500 cash to every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County who went on to graduate high school. The initiative dramatically dropped local dropout rates from 35% down to 6%.
Dolly Parton’s philanthropy remains a gold standard for authentic giving that made a measurable impact.
