MacKenzie Scott Erased Tens of Billions of Dollars in Medical Debt
Jeff Bezo’s ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, recently erased tens of billions of dollars in medical debt by funding Undue Medical Debt (formerly known as RIP Medical Debt). Rather than attempting to pay off patient bills at face value, her donations took advantage of the financial mechanisms governing distressed debt markets.
The uncollectible patient bills go into massive debt portfolios. When debts go unpaid for months or years, institutions sell these portfolios on the secondary debt market for a tiny fraction of their face value—often for pennies on the dollar.
What happens next is that private debt collection agencies buy these portfolios to profit by aggressively pursuing patients. They will try to get as much money paid as possible.
The company MacKenzie Scott funded is called Undue Medical Debt. It uses charitable funds to step in as the buyer. Once the organization owns the portfolio, it immediately forgives the entire debt balance unconditionally, ending all collection attempts, negative credit reporting, and legal threats.
Since 2020, Scott has donated over $100 million to Undue Medical Debt across multiple major grants. Her initial contributions provided the working capital for Undue Medical Debt to rapidly scale up operations, expand its tech infrastructure, and acquire massive portfolio blocks. As a result, the organization has cleared more than $40 billion in medical bills across all 50 states, benefiting millions of families.
Scott’s targeted contributions demonstrated the efficiency of philanthropic debt forgiveness, inspiring municipal governments (such as Cook County, IL, and New York City) and other high-net-worth philanthropists to replicate the approach using public and private funds.
